Physical Education Curriculum Statement


At Silvertrees Academy Physical Education provides all children with an opportunity to master a variety of fundamental physical skills which allow them to compete and enjoy a broad range of increasingly challenging sports. We aim for all children to be physically confident as well as respectful and fair to one another. All children learn how to keep their bodies healthy and we celebrate the importance of living a healthy lifestyles as a whole school at several points throughout the year.  

Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Physical Education; to master basic movements such as running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities; participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending; and perform dances using simple movement patterns.


The aims of teaching Physical Education in our school are:

  • To help children understand how to keep their bodies healthy and active
  • To evaluate and improve their physical literacy
  • To master basic skills to become co-ordinated and competent competitors.
  • To plan and perform different imaginative controlled sequences of movement
  • To embed the values of respect, fairness and teamwork in games and to communicate feelings and emotions through dance



To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Physical Education, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Physical Education is taught twice a week by a class teacher and a highly skilled coach. Teachers and Coaches collaborate to teach the skills the children are required to learn from the National Curriculum. At Silvertrees Academy, we ensure that Physical Education has the same importance given to it as the core subjects, which is why we often make links between topics or key texts the children are learning and PE lessons.


Through the collaboration children experience personalised PE lessons which complement the learning taking place in the classroom. Our Multi-sports Coach works closely with the school, teaching mastery of basic skills and helping us plan Health and Fitness/Sports days. These days inspire children to compete, celebrate and be respectful of one another whilst applying the skills they have learnt.


We teach lessons so that children:


  • Have fun and experience success in sport
  • Have the opportunity to participate in P.E at their own level of development
  • Secure and build on a range of skills
  • Develop good sporting attitudes
  • Understand basic rules
  • Experience positive competition
  • Learn in a safe environment
  • Have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.



Our PE curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. P.E is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. At Silvertrees Academy, we provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.
